Next-generation, purpose-built system-on-chip launched by Axis

Axis Communications has announced the 9th generation of its purpose-built system-on-chip (SoC). ARTPEC-9 builds on and refines capabilities and features that characterise previous generations of the company’s in-house-designed SoC: Exceptionally low bitrate, AI-powered analytics, quality imaging and enhanced cybersecurity. Axis will begin including the ARTPEC-9 SoC in select network video products beginning early 2025. In addition, in a first for the network video industry, ARTPEC-9 supports the proven AV1 video encoding standard from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). Together with Axis Zipstream, AV1 makes it easy to reduce storage cost without sacrificing forensic detail. Enhanced imaging and superior performance ARTPEC-9 boosts the powerful signature technologies that have long facilitated market-leading Axis image processing under difficult light conditions, including Axis Lightfinder and Axis Forensic Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). These are part of the foundation for Axis Scene Intelligence technology, which increases the performance of analytics applications. The outcome is consistent analytics results and fast, accurate forensic search capabilities with minimal false alarms even under challenging surveillance conditions. ARTPEC-9, along with Axis decades of experience with image processing, means security teams will acheive reliable, high-quality results in any situation. Next generation analytics ARTPEC-9 opens the door for more advanced AI analytics with increased performance that ‘see’ further away. In other words, analytics that detect smaller objects and triggers earlier to deliver actionable insights for security, safety, and operational purposes. The higher accuracy of analytics will recognise and differentiate between more object classes for more granular, nuanced, object classification. Strengthened Cybersecurity Cybersecurity is at the core of ARTPEC-9’s design. Features like secure boot and signed OS ensure that each device remains protected from cyber threats. Additionally, since ARTPEC-9 is developed in-house, Axis retains full control over the production process, further strengthening device security. New benefits for surveillance Axis introduces AV1, the next generation open video encoding standard for streaming media to the surveillance industry. Support for AV1 and enhanced image processing mean ARTPEC-9 delivers high-quality video with uncompromised detail and clarity and best-in-class bitrate. Together with Axis Zipstream, AV1, ensures hassle-free video both on-prem and in the cloud. AV1 is currently supported by AXIS Camera Station. Providers of major video management solutions (VMS) like Genetec and Milestone will be adding support for AV1, with further developments already underway. “ARTPEC-9, with its industry-first support for AV1, allows for attractive bitrate and extended client compatibility. It’s really a win for the industry,” says Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis Communications. “The keywords are ‘easy access,’ and ‘open’, which align perfectly with how we work to fulfill our promise of innovating for a smarter, safer world. Plus, like all our SoCs, ARTPEC-9 is made expressly for high-quality network video. And, as always, we retain complete control of the SoC production process.” Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. Security unwrapped: Martyn’s Law in public spaces

Martyn’s Law is set to elevate the landscape of public safety across the UK, bringing a heightened focus on perimeter security for public spaces. Jon Trott, Managing Director of Cova Security Gates, discusses the importance of safe, secure and discreet security measures in high-footfall areas, particularly as we approach the festive season. As the festive season approaches, Christmas markets appear in cities and towns across the UK, attracting families, friends and tourists to enjoy mulled wine, festive treats and handcrafted gifts. This celebration often draws vast crowds, and with them comes a crucial reminder for event organisers – the importance of public safety. This year, more than ever, security will be at the forefront of the public conversation with the introduction of Martyn’s Law. What is Martyn’s Law? Since 2017, Counter Terrorism Policing assessed that there have been 15 domestic terror attacks in the UK, and agencies and law enforcement have disrupted 39 late-stage plots. Martyn’s Law, or the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, will ensure that the public will be better protected from terrorism under new laws requiring many public venues to improve preparedness against attacks and bring in measures to help keep people safe. The new legislation is known as ‘Martyn’s Law’ in tribute of Martyn Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. The Prime Minister made a personal promise to Martyn’s mother, Figen Murray, that he would bring in this law. Under the new changes, those responsible for premises will be required to fulfil necessary but proportionate steps, according to their capacity, to help keep the public safe. The aim is to make sure staff at public venues and events have the skills and knowledge to protect themselves and others, minimising the impact of a terrorist attack. A standard tier premises will apply to locations with a capacity of more than 200 people but under 800. These businesses will be asked to undertake simple yet effective activities to put in place procedures to reduce harm to the public in the event of an attack. These could be as simple as training staff to lock doors, close shutters and identify a safe route to cover. The enhanced tier will apply to premises and events with a capacity of more than 800 individuals, given the devastating impact an attack could have in these spaces. These locations will need to put in place measures such as CCTV or hiring security staff. Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. DoorBird – Flying High Since 2014

How a Berlin Start-Up Became a Pioneer in Door Communication Ingenuity and high quality once made Germany a great place to do business. But even today, both of these points are still real keys to success. Bird Home Automation GmbH’s story from Berlin shows that focusing on core economic virtues can pave the way to dominating an entire market in just ten years. Berlin, 2014, Joachimsthaler Straße. Not far from Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s number 1 shopping boulevard, a handful of people are working high up on the 13th floor to conquer the global market for smart door intercom systems with a compact and ultra-modern and above all high-quality and affordable product: DoorBird. The goal was to make it possible for residents all over the world to speak to their visitors at the door and even open the door for them, no matter where they may be at that moment. In autumn, 2014 the time had come: The very first models had an HD camera with a 180° ultra-wide angle and night vision mode, a motion sensor, Wi-Fi, and various connections. The comprehensive range of equipment was a decisive competitive advantage, and this was also immediately recognized: On December 23, 2014, a customer from Orlando, Florida, placed the very first DoorBird order at www.doorbird.com. The first sale in Germany followed just two days later to a customer near Cologne. Smart Door Communication Taken to the Next Level But the first DoorBirds were far from the end of the story. While the so-called D10x series was still maturing into its final version in the company’s early days, another product range was already in the works: This range satisfied the high demand for models made of high-quality material (stainless steel) for flush or surface mounting, with the same technical functionality. Accessories such as the BirdGuard additional camera or an alarm siren were also taken into account. The small company then became an integral party of the door intercom market. Over the next few years, new or expanded door intercom models, indoor stations, upgrade and access control systems as well as accessory products were consistently introduced. By 2024, just ten years after the company’s foundation, the total number of products would be 2,300 if you were to factor in the different color options available. Almost every one of these many products have been met with widespread approval from customers in 161 countries. And that’s no shock, because from day one Door Bird has always precisely tailored its innovations to meet the needs of customers. Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here.
