Cellhire white paper highlights hidden risks of mobile broadband SIMs

IoT connectivity specialist Cellhire announces its new white paper, which highlights risks businesses take by using mobile broadband SIM cards to power the connectivity of IoT security devices in mobile CCTV, access control and intrusion detection systems.

“While mobile broadband SIM cards may seem attractive due to their lower costs, they lack the critical security and resilience features essential for secure IoT applications,” says Cellhire CEO Tony Guerion. “Our white paper explains how restricting mobile broadband SIM cards to a single mobile network jeopardises the reliability of their applications.”

He adds, “This limitation can lead to serious issues if devices are deployed in areas with weak signal coverage or if the network experiences an outage.”

The white paper details how mobile broadband SIMs lack the essential security features needed to counter today’s cyber threats to IoT security devices. The features include static IP security, SSL VPN and IPSEC options. Between them they provide a secure framework for data transmission, ensuring consistency of connection, safeguarding of sensitive information and encrypting data packets.
“We strongly urge any business using cellular connectivity to power their devices to conduct an urgent review and migrate to a more suitable solution where necessary,” says Guerion.

Application resilience

The white paper emphasises how IoT SIM cards are typically more physically resilient. Together with their multi-network roaming capabilities and greatly improved security they significantly enhance application resilience.

“Choosing an IoT SIM card over a broadband SIM is essential for ensuring both operational continuity and data security with a solution specifically designed for the application”, Guerion says.

IoT SIM trial

To support businesses considering the shift, Cellhire is offering a free IoT trial pack to enable them to experience the advantages of IoT SIM cards. The trial includes two complimentary IoT SIM cards valid for 60 days. allowing businesses to test the reliability, multi-network coverage and robust security features of purpose-built IoT connectivity. Additionally, the trial provides access to Cellhire’s advanced SIM management portal, giving users unprecedented insight and control over their connectivity.
