Cyber security an increasingly important issue in aviation

The second annual Airport Security conference, which was held in Rome from the 30th September to the 1st October 2014, has been labelled a great success, with positive feedback from all attendees.

The conference brought together senior airport security stakeholders from around the globe to share their respective visions for their airport’s security, as well as to discuss and debate how to overcoming the challenges faced in implementing security initiatives in an effective and cost efficient way.

Speaking about the event, Marc Pearl, President & CEO, Homeland Security & Defense Business Council, said, “If this conference has done nothing else but plant a seed of thought…then nurture that seed to address your current and future threats. Be as proactive as possible and work every day to eliminate that threat.”

Key topics discussed during the conference included:

• Regulation and Latest Policy Updates
• Ensuring that Business Continuity and Crisis Plans are Robust
• LAGs: Does it make for Better Security?
• Working Towards a Risk Based Approach to Airport Security
• Enhancing Perimeter Security
• CCTV Cameras and Biometric Access Control Systems
• The Latest Innovations in Cargo Screening
• Checkpoint of the Future
• Anti-Terrorism: Addressing the Latest Threats
• Improving the Passenger Experience of Security and Border Control
• Cutting Edge Technology – The Advanced Role of Video Analytics
• Latest Innovations in Passenger Screening

However, the topic that generated the most buzz was the need to address the growing threat of cyber security. There were even live demonstrations of hacking into an airport’s IT system. Such is the importance of this threat, that the organisers of the conference, Russell Publishing, are also organising the Airport IT Conference to explore the issue in greater detail.

Billed as the only place for Heads of IT from airports around the globe to meet and share best practice, the event is set to take place at the new Kap Europa in Frankfurt, on the 17th and 18th of November. In addition to ensuring appropriate cyber security practices become standard, attendees will be able to discover how social media, mobile and cloud technology can be used to connect with customers and streamline airport operations.

As the event’s organisers explain, airports are relying more and more on technology and innovations. This provides great opportunities, but also requires a watchful eye on cyber security, the protection of data and access to systems. Technology evolves rapidly, but it should not be deployed at a faster rate than it can be controlled and protected.

These changes and their impact on airports and IT will be presented and discussed during this two-day conference. International experts from airports, airlines and other key areas will be sharing their knowledge and experience to generate productive discussions with all participants.
