Into the cloud – Fabien Rech

Fabien Rech, VP EMEA, Trellix

What does ‘security’ mean to you?

To me, security means having the capacity to act freely; feeling protected from harm or other danger. Having worked for more than 20 years in the Cybersecurity industry, if I extrapolate this concept to the world of cyber, it is about providing my customers with the cybersecurity defences that give them peace of mind.

What made you want to work in the industry?

In 2000, while working for my own company, I was able to see the impact of a breach on a popular French website; we had received and had access to all of the site’s data including Name, First Name, Address and Date of Birth of the customers of this online platform. I realised just how critical cybersecurity solutions are.

If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?

Don’t worry, all will be ok

Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?

I spent this past New Years in the Caribbean on a cruise. I packed clothes appropriate for 30C temperatures. Unfortunately, right after my holiday, I had to go to Denver for work where it was -11C. I clearly was not prepared and had to buy socks and a warm sweater.

What three traits define you?

Compassionate, tenacious, competitive

What’s the most important trend you see today?

I think we are seeing an uptick in the number of interconnected devices.

If you didn’t work in the security industry, what would you be doing?

I would love to have been a doctor or a Physio therapist to take care of others.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?

My love for my family, wanting to protect them and spend time with them.

What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?

Compulsory: have fun together

Ban:  I would ban taking colleagues for granted

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

While I have found my ‘home’ in cybersecurity, I do see myself working from different parts of the world, and who knows, maybe even ‘magical’ places.
