Precast concrete giant launches Blokade security barrier.

An innovative security barrier that has been value engineered for complete site perimeters and not just their entrances has been launched by specialist precast concrete manufacturer Kijlstra.

The Blokade system has been designed especially to prevent vehicles of all sizes from being driven over it as its pyramid shape is designed to impale them.

Blokade is also unique in that it interlocks, each 5.2-tonne unit of four 1m2 pyramids featuring a male and female connector that simply slot into place, offering a super-secure and cost-effective anti-terrorist system for site perimeters, no matter how extensive.

Suitable for all sensitive sites including MoD, nuclear power stations, airports, ports, rail yards and factories, each unit is 1m high and 4m long (excluding male connector) and features chamfered/mitred corners and four integral lifting points.

Manufactured from smooth, self-compacting concrete and resistant to freeze/thaw attack to international standard XF4, Blokade has proven functionality over several decades, with a design life of at least 60 years.

Precast concrete is Kijlstra’s expertise but the Blokade security barrier is something of a departure for a business better known for its specialist drainage systems, including the revolutionary square manhole the company launched to the UK construction sector six years ago.

Kijlstra was established in the early 1900’s, initially as a small contracting company, but by the 1950s began to produce concrete drainage products. Through continued expansion over the decades, this privately owned company, under the group name of Vermeulen, has spread into various sectors of the construction market to include companies such as Michel Oprey and Beisterveld, Intercodam and RBM and Grain Plastics.

These subsidiaries share the common feature of all being producers and specialist distributors of products relating to the civil engineering sector. The group’s 500 employees, turnover in excess of 150 million euros and strategic bases in numerous locations throughout Western Europe, means Kijlstra can offer the very best in quality and service to the construction sector.
