Sarah Thompson, ICT

Ask the Expert – Sarah Thompson, ICT

Security Buyer sits down with Sarah Thompson, Chief Product Officer at ICT to discover more about the company who pioneered ‘unified systems’  Please introduce yourself and give a brief insight into Integrated Control Technology (ICT)?  I’m Sarah Thompson, Chief Product Officer at ICT (Integrated Control Technology). With a background in strategy, business transformation, and executive leadership, I’ve spent my career focused on building impactful products at global tech companies that truly make a difference.    ICT has been a pioneer in security solutions for over 20 years. Back when “unified systems” weren’t the buzzwords they are today, we were already leading the way with innovative access control, intruder detection, and building automation technologies.    What drew me to ICT is its mission: not just protecting people and property, but creating a world where safety is something you can truly feel.  How would you address the perception of access control readers being a “grudge” purchase, and what role do they play as a critical component of a security system?  I can see how some might perceive it as a “grudge” purchase – they can be bulky and obtrusive and at their most basic can be thought of as a fancy lock. But when an access reader is part of a full access, security and building automation system is one of the most important parts of the system. The reader not only allows or denies access, but they create a comprehensive reporting system that lightens day-to-day workloads and allows for faster responses in an emergency. They can be used to trigger duress signals to authorities without the need for audible alarms that may cause an intruder to become reckless or to leave before being apprehended. They can also increase awareness and operational efficiency when you have a reader that has a LED strip like ICT’s giving you instant status updates based on the colour of the strip.   In terms of security, how does ICT ensure its readers are resilient to modern threats, such as tampering or unauthorised access?  At its core, ICT is an access and security company, so our devices are built with the leading designs in security. From protocols like OSDP 2.2 to functions like signed firmware updates and use of a secure access module – which isolates authentication, encryption, and decryption processes within the reader – which will be available in our upcoming TSL line, we ensure our access readers are built to withstand the ever-changing security landscape. That’s why you’ll always see us pushing for smart cards or mobile credentials – while a prox card may be easy, it’s the least secure solution you can have.   How important is credential compatibility in access control systems, especially for large sites with existing cards or tags, and how does ICT address this challenge?  It’s definitely one of the things we hear about most from people who want to move from their existing access system to Protege – ‘can I bring my card with me?’ Which is not a surprise at all. The cost and time to replace credentials is a real barrier for a lot of businesses looking to come onto a modern, comprehensive system. We understand the pain this can entail. That’s why our readers are set up to read a wide variety of credentials, from low security proximity credentials like iClass dual/13.56, GProx, HID Corp1000, Indala to smart MIFARE DESFire EV1-3.  Can you explain the cost-saving and operational benefits of ICT readers being compatible with a wide range of credentials and technologies?  Think about a company that has 300 employees and imagine not only the cost, but the amount of work required to replace all the cards. Interrupting everyone’s workday, then having to deactivate every single card.  If a company uses prox. cards, we of course always recommend moving to a smart card due to the high vulnerabilities that come from low-tech cards. But we understand the difficulties of doing this all at once, which is why our dual-technology readers can read both low and high frequencies, there’s a built-in path that makes it easy to move to a more secure access solution at your own pace.  Could you share examples of how ICT readers have been used to provide operational efficiencies?  We actually recently had an amazing opportunity to help an innovative self-service hotel in Iceland – Hótel Hálönd. Our local dealer, Securitas Iceland, took up the challenge and were able to create a completely automated system by integrating Protege GX, our access readers, and their reservation system.  At Hótel Hálönd, the integration syncs customer bookings and hotel access rights so when guests are confirmed, access codes are automatically sent within 15 minutes. It also ensures that PINs are only usable for the booking period and deleted when guests leave. The Keypad Readers connected to each door means that each unique guest PIN can be used to access different areas like guest rooms and the ski/bike equipment storage. Overall, the automated solution cuts costs for the hotel which are then passed along to customers.  What are the benefits of incorporating keypad functionality into access readers, and how can this enhance security and flexibility for end-users?  We’re all human right? We leave our card or tag at home or forget to charge our phones. Having a keypad offers the flexibility for users to still gain access. By setting up permissions so that users can use their credential or a PIN, there’s no need to wait for someone else to let you in or to call up your security team.  You can also use a keypad to set up two-factor authentication for high-security areas, meaning users need both their credential – whether that’s their phone or their card – and a PIN to gain access to an area.   Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. ICT’s Single System Streamlines City Services

ICT’s Protege GX system enhances security for New Britain’s city facilities, offering seamless integration, centralized control, and streamlined access across multiple locations  New Britain is a thriving city in Connecticut, USA. It’s nicknamed “Hardware City”, as it houses the Stanley Black & Decker corporation headquarters.  The City of New Britain turned to local ICT integrators Mammoth Security for a complete refit of security services at City Hall, followed by a system expansion to include the new Public Works Operations Center that was under construction.  City Hall safely secured  “Our security equipment was end of life, so we needed to go to something else,” explains Jon Delgadillo, Director of Support Services at the City of New Britain. After installing 90 doors with access control, plus CCTV at City Hall, Mammoth Security got rave reviews for their work.  New Britain mayor, Erin Stewart said, “We’re really grateful for Mammoth. Safety and security is their upmost priority. They came in on-time, under budget, and made all our staff and employees feel safe.”  The mayor was so impressed that the City of New Britain had no hesitation in tasking Mammoth Security to extend the current ICT Protege GX system to include the new Public Works Operations Center.  System expansion for City Yard  The new City Yard has 4 buildings, 24 doors, and houses the entire Department of Public Works staff and administration.  Delgadillo says, “We can store the city fleet properly, including vehicles and equipment. The new Fire Department maintenance garage is attached, and it’s also going to be one of the city’s main backup data centres.  Intrusion integrated  Eugene Klimaszewski, President at Mammoth Security, explains what will make life easier for Delgadillo and the Public Works team. “We’ve installed long-range readers at the main gate for ease of access. And the overhead garage doors and intrusion detection are all integrated and controlled through Protege GX.  Delgadillo continues, “With over 50 garage doors, being able to integrate alarms into the security platform means employees can be sure the doors are all closed before arming. Notifications that a door is open is a huge benefit of the ICT system.”  Single platform shows it’s strength  Protege GX is a multi-site, unified platform that can be very easily expanded and will continue to secure City of New Britain, well into the future.  As Delgadillo says, “I’m looking for an access control system that is hardy, affordable, and easy to use. ICT definitely provides all of this with their world-class solution, products, and support.”  One card, multiple sites  The City of New Britain now has a centralised hub for ICT at City Hall. As Delgadillo explains, “Even with multiple locations that running ICT, we can see what’s going on at our hub and monitor everything from there.”  “We get even more value now ICT access control is in other city facilities. With a single card or code, a person can access multiple buildings and that’s a benefit for all city personnel. I’d definitely recommend ICT to other municipalities, it’s such a user-friendly access system. We wish we could achieve this solution in all our facilities.”  View the video – QR code to https://info.ict.co/l/817403/2024-11-11/3nrzf9   Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. ICT & Milestone unified with new integrations

Integrated Control Technology (ICT) has released paired integrations between Protege GX, and Milestone’s XProtect platforms. The user can choose on which front-end the events will be monitored and managed  ICT’s Protege GX platform provides a unified access control and intrusion detection platform with features like floor plans and status pages, for end-user’s ease of use. The user can embed the cameras managed by Milestone XProtect VMS system directly into the Protege GX dashboard and maps, enabling them to link video to doors, areas, inputs and outputs events – such as a live video feed popping up when an access denied event is triggered.  In this set-up, users would need to purchase GX camera licenses.  Milestone XProtect as the font end   This integration allows users to manage Protege GX access and intrusion events directly in XProtect for robust oversight and control. All Protege GX doors and areas can be added into XProtect maps, giving security staff a full overview and understanding of what is happening across their sites. Custom alarms can be set using the Protege GX events – from sending a notification to arm the area when everyone has left a room or floor, to alerting the appropriate person when a manager has left a high security area, but staff are still there unsupervised. The integration also enables visual verification, to check who is requesting access.   Integrating Protege GX events into XProtect enables a unified security system, streamlining operations and providing meaningful events to the security staff for them to act upon.   In this configuration, users would need to purchase a Protege GX Milestone Integration License.  “Security systems can be very complex, and it is important to offer both flexibility and interoperability to end-users” says Thomas Napora, General Manager and Vice President EMEA for ICT. “With this updated integration offering, end-users are given the choice of which platform they want to use as frontend to manage events: their access control platform or VMS platform.   Whichever way the end-user decides, they will benefit from the insights and control provided by linking cameras to doors, inputs, outputs and areas.  The details of what is required for either configuration can be found on the Milestone Marketplace portal. Showcased recently at the Milestone XPerience days in Dubai, the new integration was very well received by the Milestone partners and ecosystem. The next opportunity will be at the Milestone XPerience Day in Istanbul Turkiye on the 22nd October. Sarah Thompson ICT

The Innovator – Sarah Thompson

Rebecca Spayne of Security Buyer speaks with Sarah Thompson, Chief Product Officer, Integrated Control Technology about all things access control and building management  Please introduce yourself and give us a brief insight into ICT.  I have a background in strategy development, business transformation, and executive leadership. It’s always been in product development at global tech companies, and I’ve always worked for organisations that I think do some good.   ICT started more than 20 years ago as Integrated Control Technologies, and as a manufacturer of security solutions, we’ve led the way with unified systems for access control, intruder detection, and building automation – long before this was fashionable.  So, for me, the attraction of ICT is around making people and property safe – and not just to be safe, but to feel safe.  Is the way people are interacting with security systems changing? How?  There’s massive variation in the environments that security systems go into, and therefore there are very different approaches in how those environments are managed.  I think we need to recognise that the training and experience of the person administrating the system day to day can vary wildly. Dependent on the system installed and the location, it could be anyone from an HR employee or an office manager, all the way through to a fully deployed 24/7 Security Operations Centre with full time eyes-on-glass.  Similarly, we also see a high variation in how people want to interact with their security system – again from a fully staffed 24/7 SOC to someone who just wants to be able to easily manage things from a mobile device on the go.  A common thread for everyone though, is that people want a system that is flexible and can be configured to their specific needs. They want choice on the supporting applications that make up the system (like VMS, or visitor management etc), and they want something that is approachable, intuitive and easy to use.   We must recognise that our user base is constantly evolving. Turnover in some roles can be high, so security systems need to be easier to learn, easier to use, and much more approachable.  On top of this, we also need to train people who operate the platform day-to-day to ensure they get the most benefit of their investment.  You mentioned working to make security more approachable. Can you explain what that means?   Our CEO, Hayden Burr, talks about the transition towards allowing people freedom to access while controlling and managing movements in a more efficient way.  If we make it easier to use for the least qualified users, all users ultimately benefit. Securing an environment is serious, but at the same time it doesn’t need to be hard.  Does this ultimately mean a different experience for all users?  Absolutely. A regular user wants a system that they don’t have to think about, it needs to be almost invisible for them without unnecessary hold ups.   For administrators, security may not be their primary role, so they need something which is easy to use & learn and helps them make the right choices to keep things secure.  And for integrators, while providing a product that has the flexibility to meet their customers’ needs is important, having easier to use systems that reduce training time and mistakes, are an easier sell to the end user.  And, easier to configure systems also minimise programming and lessen the physical time on site.  Tell us about ICT’s journey from a feature-rich platform that can do anything if you know how to program it, to a more intuitive one.  I’ve had many a customer tell me there is so much that you can do with an ICT system. Our Protege platforms are very configurable and offer such a wide range of options to the integrator. This means they suit a wide range of environments, like these real-world examples such as an enterprise level local government install in Australia that spans across a city, to remote monitoring of a de-icing system in Canada, to a recently opened self-service hotel in Iceland.  Traditionally, our focus has not been on how we make the system easier and better to use – capability has come at the expense of usability. That has meant that integrators really need to know the system well to get the most benefit out of it.  Last year we started to change that with a series of User Experience design workshops looking at how we make the lives of our administrators, users, and integrators better.  We will bring out a new look and feel starting with our mobile platform (which covers both users and administrators), before rolling out changes across other platforms and interfaces. And this is just the start of what we’re doing at ICT to bring a more customer-focused experience.  Technology has evolved and manufacturers are no longer ‘penned’ into one sector, for example Access Control, but instead are integrating a number of services into their offering. Does this change the customer’s approach to selecting the right solution?   As company that was founded on an open, unified approach over 20 years ago, this is something we’ve always passionately believed in at ICT. Of course, we’ve seen an increased focus on the importance of integrations and the value they can bring.  And while the industry will keep pushing towards more cloud-based systems, there is a percentage who will remain on premise due to the security requirements of the location….
