Transport Security Expo – A Show of Security

Now in its 12th year, Transport Security Expo (TRS) continues to provide the premier meeting and exhibiting place for the global transport security industry and this year offers an expanded show, enhanced conference programme and live demonstrations to reflect the latest issues and requirements in the sector.

As the UK has grown to become the benchmark for transport security so has the Transport Security Expo (TRS) grown alongside it to become the global networking and educational hub for the world’s transport security industry.

This year, TRS finds itself more relevant than ever with another difficult year for transport networks under severe pressure from security threats of all forms and from all four corners of the globe.

From the two tragic aviation disasters involving Malaysian Airlines that saw Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing go missing over the South China Sea and Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur callously shot down over the Ukraine conflict zone to continued piracy through the world’s busiest commercial waterways; this has been another 12 months for transport security to analyse and look for solutions.

And as usual TRS will be the place where the industry’s senior figures will come to do exactly that through networking, debating and learning.

Last year – TRS’s biggest year to date – almost 4,000 such figures from 88 different countries attended TRS with those figures are expected to be exceeded in 2014 as the event continues to engage on a global basis.

This year Australia’s Transport Commissioner Paul Retter is flying to host the event’s VIP Airport Programme and join 50 officials from the UK Department for Transport and 30 representatives from the British Transport Police while a further 22 foreign countries are also in discussion to send delegations to the event.

Once again a great deal of industry research and advice from prominent members of the transport security world has been formulated into a conference programme that boasts a collection of world-class speakers and topics that will address key issues and concerns across the sector.

The Aviation, Maritime and Rail Security conferences have this year been bolstered by two new conferences for Major Events Transport Security and Secure Transportation. Major events transport security has been firmly on the agenda in 2014 with the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Brazil World Cup, which highlighted the issues off staging such global gatherings among civil unrest, while the Secure Transportation Conference will look at protection of high value assets and dignitaries among other areas.

A packed rail security conference will address all areas of rail security concerns from terrorism and cyber attacks to crime prevention and metal theft with full analysis of the risk and cost associated with delivering a secure rail network. A line-up of top-level speakers includes British Transport Police’s counter terrorism lead Superintendent David Roney, CCTV and PSIM Standards Working Group Chairman Dave Gorshkov, SIDOS Technical Security Director Chris Stevens and Dr Herve Borrion from the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science.

The major events transport security conference will look at lessons from the past, actions for the present and what the future of major events transport security holds with topics including the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. A standout collection of speakers includes Stephen Phipson from the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism, Shuna Mayes, Head of the Commonwealth Games Safety and Security Unit, Isle of Wight Festival Operations Manager Dave Steele and Tim Cutbill, Head of Operational Resilience for London Fire Brigade.

Transport Security 2014 logoAnother new conference at TRS 2014, the secure transportation conference will cover all aspects of area from securing cash and valuables in transit to VIP protection and covert intelligence gathering. Presenters on the day include Brink’s Global Services Director Phil Wright, Arts Council England National Security Advisor William Brown and Counter Terrorism Security advisor for Cleveland Police John Bickerstaff.

A mainstay on the TRS conference programme, maritime security will look at the current state of play in maritime security, implications for the global supply chain, piracy, the maritime cyber threat and the implementing of new strategies and directives. Speakers include UK National Maritime Security Committee Chairman Gavin Simmonds, INTERPOL Maritime Security Head Dimitrios Souxes and former Royal Navy Commander-in-Chief Fleet Sir James Burnell-Nugent.

Finally, the aviation conference will look at the evolving terrorist threat to aviation, dealing with increased passenger numbers, cyber security and technology innovation in aviation security. Another impressive line-up of speakers includes Heathrow Airport Security Director Francis Morgan, Airport Operators Association policy director Rebecca Roberts-Hughes, author Dave Sloggett and IBM Head of National security, Middle East and Africa, Paul Burke.

The extension of the conference programme for TRS represents the determination of the event organisers to ensure that the event continues to grow and adapt to the requirements of the industry.

Peter Jones from TRS 2014 organisers Nineteen Events said: “TRS is an organic event that grows with the industry we serve. The expansion of the show to include Major Events Transport Security and Secure Transportation conferences is essential to ensure we remain current and relevant in line with the requirements of the global transport security industry.”

Another new addition to this year’s TRS event is the Live Demonstration Theatre, which will provide live real-time examples of security scenarios and solutions in action. Expert teams will demonstrate how to tackle a classic ‘Crowd Control’ scenario as an unsecured mob hits TRS while ‘Venue Search’ will provide best practice on how to search a venue prior to the opening of a major event or in a situation where a suspect package has been found. Remote Operated Vehicles will be used to demonstrate how IEDs are inspected and removed in the IED Disposal demonstration while Cyber Hack will see a hacker illustrate just how easy it can be to bypass even the most secure of networks and with it potentially commandeer control of a passenger aircraft, train or ship.

The enhanced programme for TRS 2014 will also see the very latest in armoured vehicles showcased for attendees to personally check out in the Security Vehicle Zone for protection of VIPs, celebrities, high net worth people and cash in transit.

Finally, TRS are also delighted to welcome support from ADS – the premier trade organisation for the UK Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space industries.

This new partnership allied to the refreshed programme of conference events and live demonstrations further enhances TRS as the de facto place for networking, education and solution finding in the global transport security industry.
