Osama bin Laden: killed in Pakistan

US President Barack Obama told the world early this morning that US forces had attacked and killed Osama bin Laden in an operation in Pakistan. Even as he announced the news, Obama warned that US citizens around the world should be on high alert for retaliatory strikes.

In the 9 min, 28 second speech (see video below), Obama praised the soldiers who carried out the operation and told the families of the victims of 9/11 that they were never forgotten.

Even as celebrations broke out around the globe, world leaders were warning about the need to remain vigilant against revenge attacks.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Of course it does not mark the end of the threat we face from extremist terrorism. Indeed, we will have to be particularly vigilant in the weeks ahead. But it is, I believe, a massive step forward.”

The MI5 threat level remains at Severe, with the threat principally coming from Al Qaida.

The US State Department issued a travel alert for Americans worldwide: “Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, US citizens in areas where events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations.”
