Aperio® moves into accommodation at University of Aberdeen

Access Control, a division of ASSA ABLOY UK, has supplied its Aperio® locking solution to stylish student accommodation at the University of Aberdeen, to add high performance security to a £10m refurbishment programme.

Two accommodation blocks at the University of Aberdeen’s Hilhead student village, Esslemont & Burnett, together with Hector Boece were fully refurbished to facilitate more energy efficient buildings and modern facilities, close to the University campus.

To complete the works, the Estates Design team worked with local system integrators to seek a smart access control security system.

ASSA ABLOY’s open platform ARX solution was sourced to enable a scaleable approach to new opportunities for integrated security solutions to be installed across the student accommodation village.

To date, over 740 doors have been fitted with Aperio® on line access control units on flat entrance and plant rooms, utilising specialist MIFARE technology, and ARX controllers added to the new system.

The Aperio® wireless locking solution allows free egress via the lock handle when required and the use of existing card credentials on additional online doors. This provides real time audits and instant updates of access restrictions through the existing access control system.

Damian Marsh, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Access Control concluded: “Aperio® is a popular choice for Universities across the UK, as it offers an innovative solution with the capability to secure, monitor and record required activity, using just one cost effective system, that instantly integrates with existing access control units such as ARX.

“This is great news for financially and resource strained estates teams who continue to be pressured to balance cost savings but have a duty of care to students, staff and visitors. As the University of Aberdeen demonstrates, Aperio® can be easily specified on a scaleable basis to work with budgets and phased work programmes, and yet still always result in a high quality, stylish security solution.”
