ASSA ABLOY Access Control

Who’s Who: ASSA ABLOY

ASSA ABLOY’s latest industry report analyses how wireless access control is evolving — and how security managers can benefit  Being innovative and staying at the forefront of technology is what helped us to grow from humble beginnings to providing access solutions for organisations moving from the mechanical to the digital world.   Today with operations in over 70 countries, our pioneering approach remains the focus as we continuously develop our Digital Access Solutions. Expert solutions that help billions of people move seamlessly, securely, and safely through buildings with ease, every day. Whatever the size, location, or type of business you run, we can help you digitalise your buildings’ access control, so it is scalable and ready for tomorrow’s world – today.  We help you digitalise and future-proof your buildings with a wide range of access solutions  meeting your individual needs and assisting you also with latest market insights around the digitalisation of access.   The latest report biennial. Connectivity and convenience are key themes in the latest Wireless Access Control Report 2023 edition.  Using data gathered from a new survey of 400 security, facilities management and IT professionals, the 2023 Report identifies trends which will shape this market and customers’ experience over the coming years. The Report was produced by IFSEC Insider and includes expert contributions from analysts Omdia.  “We are delighted once again to offer fresh insights into the ongoing digitalisation of access,” says Richard Sharp, Director, Product Line Management, Digital Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions. “A particular focus of the 2023 Report is access control’s potential impact on the wider business — as an enabler for business intelligence, cost efficiency and of course better sustainability performance.”  “The Report highlights ways for security departments and consultants to contribute directly to business strategy — and indeed, reveals data which makes it clear this process should happen sooner rather than later.”  Convenience, connectivity and decision-making power for security managers  Convenience has triumphed. End-users prize flexible, scalable technologies which are easy to use and to integrate with building systems. In the Report survey, 93% of respondents agreed that compatible, integration-ready standards are important when choosing or recommending access control.   “Security is often assumed these days,” adds Sharp. “The role of access control is now to help the business work smarter, saving time and costs in the process.”  One key technology is the smartphone, of course. Data from the Report highlights fast-growing deployment of mobile credentials in organisations of almost every size and type.  Alongside convenience, the Report makes an urgent business case for connected intelligence — within and across organisational functions — including by combining cyber and physical security under one roof.   For example, only 12% of survey respondents felt fully prepared for forthcoming European cyber-security legislation. “The cyber-security knowledge gap in ‘traditional’ security and facilities management departments is real,” says Sharp. “As the Report also highlights, combination cyber–physical security attacks are on the rise. Now is a good time to upgrade both systems and knowledge.”  The economic climate has encouraged organisations of every size and type to focus on cost and workflow efficiencies. This presents an opportunity for security managers and directors to show how they can contribute to business success — and quickly.   “Data gathered from security systems can be used in many other areas of the business, such as managing the hybrid working patterns of the staff and improving energy efficiency by only heating and/or lighting areas of the building which are occupied,” notes the Report.  “Security can escape its silo,” Sharp adds. “Indeed, it must, if organisations are to thrive.”  Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. Keyless

Keyless locking solution for medical practices

Even in the busiest dental or doctors’ practice, there is a simple way to give patients privacy, protect medical equipment and keep personal belongings safe: a Code Handle Door Lock. This simple, secure door handle with inbuilt digital PINpad is easy to fit and straightforward to use — with no need for specialists or software. It’s the perfect security solution for waiting rooms and medicine rooms, drug stores, consulting rooms and staff rooms. ASSA ABLOY’s Code Handle Door Lock is the elegant way to filter access to private rooms in public spaces. In a medical or dental practice, not all staff should have access to every room. Private consultations must remain private: Code Handle makes sure they do. Practices across Europe use Code Handle to secure doors to controlled drugs or hazardous waste bins. With Code Handle everything is keyless. No one needs to track physical keys or get locks changed when one goes missing. All medical settings have equipment which could attract opportunist thieves. Patient documentation, of course, is confidential. With Code Handle, all this gets the extra level of security it deserves — without the cost of fitting access control. Elegant door security that’s easy to install, even easier to use ASSA ABLOY Code Handle is a locking handle with built-in digital PIN keypad. A secure 4- to 6-digit PIN ensures only authorized people enter. There’s no key to use or track. Building users don’t even need to remember to lock the door behind them: Code Handle locks itself when the door shuts, while permitting code-free exit from the inside. To install, simply swap an existing door handle for Code Handle. It fits directly onto the door and lock case, replacing the existing handle and takes two screws to fix in place: easy for non-specialists or for any locksmith. There’s no wiring and no software. Code Handle is already trusted at surgeries, stockrooms, workspaces and almost anywhere else a private door meets a public space. To power the lock’s digital security, standard batteries slot into the handle itself. There are no keys and no software. It’s that easy. In Belgium, Code Handle already guarantees patient privacy When a medical clinic in Belgium extended their premises, they sought modern, hassle-free door security to protect the practice and its team of five staff. Alongside security and convenience, the major issue Dermatologie Nijlen wanted to address was patient privacy. “What we do most is to examine patients from top to toe. They need to take all their clothes off,” explains Dr Nele Cattaert, dermatologist co-founder of Dermatologie Nijlen. “You see them watch the door and wonder whether anyone could barge in.” Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. ASSA ABLOY launches new panic and emergency exit hardware

Specifically designed for aluminium doors with Concealed Vertical Rods (CVR), the newly launched range of push bar, push pad, and touch bar panic and emergency exit devices and external hardware from ASSA ABLOY forms an integral part of building safety. Ideal for new builds and renovations on private and commercial projects, such as retail and hospitality spaces, the range can also be retrofitted to the most common current hardware products in the marketplace, making them ideal for RMI projects in the public sector. Independently tested and certified to EN 1125 and EN 179, the hardware is fully compliant to UKCA and CE standards. Successfully passing the rigours of PAS 24 as a component of a doorset – a security requirement in many commercial buildings – they offer added peace of mind to the building owner and users. No additional keeps or doorset detailing are required for a doorset to complete PAS 24 testing, making this latest solution compliant out of the box and saving customers time and cost. Plus, ASSA ABLOY can help customers with PAS 24 testing through its UKAS-accredited test lab. The external hardware can be locked off to prevent un-authorised entry, without compromising building users’ ability to escape. The OAD lever shape and panic products help meet the requirements of BS 8300, ensuring buildings are accessible by all users as well as giving an attractive suited range that creates a coordinated finish throughout the building. Alison Aston from ASSA ABLOY said: “Building on our heritage in the aluminium door hardware market, with our brands like Adams Rite, the new range is easier for our customers to stock and simpler to install, saving them time and cost. Thanks to our in-house expertise, our products are UK designed, tested, and manufactured – providing added supply chain security and quality assurance. When creating the new range, we’ve listened to customer feedback, and have developed products that are affordable and instantly compatible with PAS 24 and non-PAS 24 doorsets, reducing the need for additional stock holding and/or door fabrication. Plus, as a retrofittable product, they are quick to install and can instantly upgrade a building’s aesthetics and safety.” Suitable for a wide variety of applications, the new range can be used on either single or non-rebated double doors and both the push bar and touch bar can be cut to size on site, allowing for a more bespoke fit. connected

Why connected access control makes life easier

To enjoy the benefits of connected security, businesses need security technologies which work seamlessly with each other. In a recent survey of industry professionals, over 90% noted the critical importance of integration across building management functions. But why is integration judged to be so important? What exactly are its benefits? And how can an organization reap them? In fact, there are several ways a connected access solution can help a business to do more — both enhancing security and contributing to overall business success. Control every system from a single seat “Access control systems are often viewed as the starting point for a building to shift from operating in siloes, towards a more functional, connected and ‘integrated’ building management system,” explains a new IFSEC Global white paper on security management. The white paper considers integration’s cost and efficiency impact on organizations. Control from a single, integrated interface boosts efficiency in many ways. Some are individual to the industry or business, but there are advantages which apply almost anywhere. Firstly, integration reduces training needs and therefore costs: Everything is administered from a single system, rather than several working in isolation. Secondly, when facilities staff only consult or update one interface, they save time and reduce manual errors. In a real-world situation, integration can even save facility managers’ journey time. At the InHolland University of Applied Sciences, for example, a Nedap AEOS system integrated with Aperio wireless devices controls access for seven different campuses from a single, integrated point. Thirdly, analytics can deliver more value and better insights when multiple sources of data provide input. Future-proof a system with standards-compliant hardware Connected access control helps businesses to retool building management for the challenges of the 2020s. The smart building is integrated and automated, relying on standards for interoperability to keep data flowing in every direction. OSDP, for example, streamlines the interoperability of access control and security devices. ONVIF Profile D & Profile M help access control devices connect with analytics. Access control hardware which is designed for interoperability — with accessible APIs and SDKs for app integration — creates security which is ready for what’s next, even when predicting “what’s next” can be difficult. Access Control

Access control options? Wireless doesn’t tie you down

As one recent market report highlights, more and more organisations are switching to wireless access control to secure premises. Their motivations are well rehearsed.   Wireless devices offer greater flexibility without sacrificing security. With integrated RFID readers, they are easy to retrofit to existing doors and buildings, giving security managers much more control over a site. And because they are battery powered and use almost no electricity when idle, wireless access control helps companies reduce energy bills.   But choosing to cut the cables is only the first of many welcome choices when you switch to wireless.   Choose your credential Wireless access control — including Aperio, SMARTair and CLIQ wireless locking from ASSA ABLOY — gives you the widest possible choice of credentials. You don’t even need to abandon physical keys.   In ASSA ABLOY’s CLIQ key-based access control system, programmable keys with batteries power the cylinder or padlock via an encrypted interface.   Electromechanical CLIQ and fully electronic eCLIQ cylinders are available for doors, cabinets, lifts, alarm boxes, machines and entrance gates. Users reprogram or revalidate their key access rights at wall devices, with portable programming devices or making a Bluetooth connection between the key and the CLIQ Connect mobile phone app.   Card-based access control leaves your credential options wide open. Both Aperio wireless locking devices for upgrading access control systems and SMARTair access control systems are compatible with all leading RFID proximity protocols, including MIFARE, DESFire and iCLASS. Users can pick from standard smart-cards, tags, bracelets and other convenient formats, tailored to the site. Wireless escutcheons come with optional PINpads, for doors where multi-factor authentication is needed for upgraded security.   In addition, a SMARTair system offers mobile-ready access. With SMARTair, administrators can open electronic door locks remotely. At the user end, the Openow app stores validated virtual keys on a smartphone, so there’s no need for anyone to visit a security office to physically collect or update a credential. SMARTair virtual keys can be sent or revoked over the air — for maximum, time-saving flexibility. Users just tap the SMARTair lock to open up via Bluetooth.   How big? How small? No limits to building size or type Whatever size your premises, and no matter what work you do, a wireless access control system fits. In the healthcare sector, our card-based access systems manage huge hospitals and small doctors’ surgeries — where optional anti-bacterial coatings preserve hygienic environments.   ASSA ABLOY wireless access control protects single-unit shops and whole shopping malls; care homes and corporate headquarters. From Helen Oy power stations in Helsinki to ULab, Alicante’s newest co-working space, wireless is the right solution.   Key-based access system CLIQ, for example, caters to complex, multi-location businesses with thousands of locks securing hundreds of employees, plus contractors who need access round the clock. Many utilities operate remote sites, miles from reliable mains electricity, and often at the mercy of extreme weather. None of these challenges stops CLIQ cylinders and padlocks delivering the trusted security critical infrastructure demands.   CLIQ is not just for the giants. One user-friendly extension of the technology, CLIQ Go** enables small business owners to manage an access system from a mobile app. A few taps on the screen is all it takes to cancel, issue or change the door permissions for an employee’s CLIQ key.   A menu of system management options Wireless access control does not restrict your system management workflows. The backbone of every ASSA ABLOY wireless access system is intuitive software which makes it easy for facility managers to control, identify and update exactly who can open every door.   For all ASSA ABLOY wireless access ecosystems, a user-friendly software interface is accessible from almost any standard PC, tablet or smartphone. It gives facility managers an instant overview of their site’s security status from anywhere.   With Aperio wireless locks, you manage the new doors from the same interface as your existing access control system. Aperio devices integrate online or offline (or both) with access systems from over 100 different manufacturers. System administrators see only one, familiar admin interface. SMARTair offers a menu of management options from standalone operation through offline and Update on Card control to real-time control via SMARTair Wireless Online functionality.

SMARTair™ cures lost key troubles for a Toulouse retirement home

Care home investment is on the rise, and operators of new and established residences are building premises adapted to deliver 21st-century care. Increasingly, their focus turns to wireless access control — and how it can make everyday life easier and safer for residents, while giving security managers more control over their site.   Toulouse’s Petites Soeurs des Pauvres retirement home was formerly inside a building dating from the 1800s. When owners decided the site no longer met modern standards of security, comfort and hygiene, they decided to replace the old building with new premises, while retaining the structure’s original shape and the historic chapel at its centre.   Work began in 2015, and residents moved into the new building in 2016. Further construction phases continue through 2018.   Petites Soeurs des Pauvres chose SMARTair™ wireless electronic access control. Every door at their new site is protected with a SMARTair™ wireless electronic cylinder or escutcheon with built-in card reader. In addition, access to 2 lifts is controlled with SMARTair™ wall readers. Because SMARTair™ devices are wireless and battery powered, both installation and operation are cost-efficient.   Now, over 80 residents and 50 employees come and go easily, but only where they’re authorised. SMARTair™ credentials are simple for all client groups to use. Older residents who find it a challenge to live independently can unlock doors easily with a bracelet or tag credential, for example.   Facility managers and security administrators always know “who has the key” for every room or area. It’s easy to add, delete or update users or doors from the central system software at any time. Device management is via Update On Card, with a portable updater providing the link to the system. SMARTair™ has eliminated the laborious task of mechanical master-key management.   SMARTair™ has also removed the burden and significant costs lost keys were placing on securing this home: “An employee left with his card. No panic! We cancelled it, and that’s all,” explains Laurent Joosep.   “I recommend SMARTair™ because it meets the basic needs of access control and solves the problem of key replacement.”   About Petites Soeurs des Pauvres: Petites Soeurs des Pauvres is an international group of homes for elderly residents, run by a long-established religious congregation. It operates 240 retirement residences around the world, including 40 in France. For more background information, visit www.petitessoeursdespauvres.org.   To find out how Petites Soeurs des Pauvres went wireless cost-effectively, visit www.tesa.es/smartair-residential

Securing student accommodation: SMARTair™ access control handles high traffic and rapid resident turnover

Wireless door devices, locker locks and wall readers put accommodation managers in total control Given the choice, would you rather run security at a bank vault or at student halls of residence? At least the bank job is straightforward: keep the money inside, and everyone else out. If only protecting hundreds of young people was so easy. Student accommodation blocks are usually large, with high traffic moving from bedrooms to common areas, canteens and libraries. A single resident travelling between her room, a study area, the gym and a couple of trips offsite would use secure doors 15 times a day. In a residence housing just 200 students, that’s 3,000 daily events for the access system to handle. Rapid student turnover puts a further admin burden on facility managers. Imagine, among hundreds of students living at the halls, just a handful leave or arrive each semester. That’s a couple of manual key handovers to schedule every week, and to chase if a key-holder fails to appear. If keys are not handed in, is a room really secure for its next occupant? And how can you know if one has been copied? With physical keys and mechanical locks, security lacks flexibility, and it’s impossible to get a site overview without a time-wasting manual key audit. Today’s students, tomorrow’s secure solutions Mechanical security is not the answer, because mechanical locks don’t offer the control or flexibility managers need. There’s no real-time monitoring, and you can’t generate detailed audit trails for locks or users, meaning there’s no easy way to track unauthorised access — in cases of a theft, for example. The current crop of students — so-called “Generation Z” — were raised as digital natives. They expect convenience as a standard feature, not a mechanical solution first used in Ancient Egypt. In Europe’s increasingly international, marketised higher education system, attracting these tech-savvy students and keeping them satisfied with the campus experience are critical. The SMARTair™ wireless access system is built to meet the challenges of securing a student residence: A system needs the product and software robustness to handle so many users, high traffic, and fast resident turnover. SMARTair™ has it. A system should make student life easier with cards, rather than keys. SMARTair™ does. A system should secure more than just doors, including cabinet locks and devices to protect secure areas like car parks. SMARTair™ does. A system must be easy to upgrade in the future, both adding new doors and upgrading the functionality of the devices already installed. SMARTair™ is; it future-proofs your investment. A system should be able to handle additional student services like the vending machines and canteen on the same credential card as the room door lock. SMARTair™ can. A wireless access control system like SMARTair™ can help solve admin problems with a combination of control and cost-effectiveness. It is based on battery-powered locks and is easy to retrofit wirelessly to existing premises or incorporate in a new-build. Installers simply swap the existing mechanical lock for a wireless device and link the door to the management software. Slim, robust SMARTair™ devices can secure almost any opening. Escutcheons (with optional keypad for added security) are ideal for student bedrooms, and fit wood or glass, emergency exit and even fire doors. Available with or without PIN entry, SMARTair™ wall readers can filter lift, main door or car park access. The SMARTair™ knob cylinder is easy to retrofit to management offices; you just replace an existing mechanical cylinder with the SMARTair™ device. For storing belongings, SMARTair™ cabinet and locker locks are configurable in the same system without the need for an extra module. With SMARTair™, students come and go using programmable smart cards, tags, or even the secure SMARTair™ mobile app — not a cumbersome, easy-to-lose key. SMARTair™ devices support all major RFID technologies. Plus, students only need carry one credential to open their door and access additional onsite services. A single card to unlock their room, secure their belongings inside a locker, enter the library, pay for photocopying and buy lunch makes sense for them. It’s another step to boosting resident convenience. Already trusted by students all over Europe SMARTair™ is already making life easier for student residence managers all over Europe, including at Mezzino’s Rialto Court in Middlesbrough, UK www.mezzino.co.uk. “We are so pleased with the result. We are already looking to adopt the access control system for the other student accommodation properties we manage nationwide,” says James McGrath, Mezzino’s co-owner and director. At Funway Academic Resort in Madrid (www.funwayresort.com), student rooms are locked with SMARTair™ escutcheons. Energy-saving wall devices inside rooms regulate electricity use, and students have an individual safe fitted with a SMARTair™ cabinet lock. Students and staff open all their authorised doors with the same access card: the Funway gym, study rooms, games rooms, swimming pool and changing rooms, spa and staff areas are also locked with SMARTair™ escutcheons. “The system meets the expectations we had and offers very easy maintenance,” says Mario Arias, Facility Manager at Funway.
