CCTV Image magazine issue 45: Featuring Sandwell Homes, CCTV in Devon and Cornwall and video review software

In this issue of CCTV Image, we visit Sandwell Homes near Birmingham to take a look at the new multi-million pound control room. We also go on a tour of control rooms in Devon and Cornwall with the director of the CCTV User Group and hear from a software company about their unique CCTV review technology.

CCTV Image is the official magazine of the CCTV User Group and strives to tell the stories of how CCTV systems are operated and also to bring you information about technology that is changing and improving CCTV. If you have a story for CCTV Image, please email the editor.

  • From their new control room, Sandwell looks after 30,000 homes including 40 tower blocks using a combination of CCTV and intercom communications. They monitor the cameras for two nearby towns and the control room was built to BS5979 Cat 2 standards and will soon be monitoring intruder alarms as well. In this article we talk to the council plus the manufacturers who made the system possible. SecurityNewsDesk has also produced a video report about Sandwell Homes.
  • The director of the CCTV User Group recently toured the Southwest, visiting half a dozen control rooms in Devon and Cornwall. He found examples of councils that had made tremendous progress in the past six or seven years and he also found instances where service levels are threatened by the current economic climate. This article is not only relevant to people with an interest in the Southwest but anyone who is interested in the pressures affecting control rooms up and down the country.
  • It’s a case of double double take which can look a bit strange at first, but the Briefcam video review system is a quick way to review hours of video footage in minutes. The software continuously monitors a video feed, building up a summary of the footage. The user can then select the time period he wishes to view and the system instantly generates a short video clip which takes just a few minutes to view. If that sounds interesting, you can read more about this ingenious system in the magazine.
  • We also review the Milestone MIPS conference, look at display solutions, take a look at a control room merger and check in with our regular columnists Martin Gill and Simon Lambert.

Finally, on a sad note, we also say goodbye to two stalwarts of the CCTV industry. Ray Stead and John Broomfield died of cancer within weeks of each other. Both were determined and talented champions of CCTV in their own areas. There’s more about both of these men in this edition of the magazine.
