Into the cloud – Morey Haber

Into the cloud with Morey Haber, Chief Security Officer at BeyondTrust

What does ‘security’ mean to you?

Security is the identification and mitigation of risks that could disrupt expected operations of a resource and the data contained within.

What made you want to work in the industry?

My role in cyber security was accidental. I made the decision to expand my horizons from traditional IT into IS and found it be challenging, rewarding and an amazing learning experience. Based on the experience, I cannot imagine doing anything different.

If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be?

If I could change anything in the cyber security industry, I would like to see global standardisation and enforcement of laws pertaining to the committing of cybercrimes and data theft. Then, any new cyber-attacks could truly be identifiable as state sponsored warfare and not rogue cybercriminal organisations.

Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?

My dog is a 10lbs high energy bundle of joy that wants to play nearly every waking moment. Recently we introduced him to miniature tennis balls that he can easily carry in his month. The best thing about them is playing catch and he will do anything physically possible to catch the ball before it hits the ground. The results are jumps, contortions and diving catches that would go viral on any social media app.

What’s the most important trend you see today?

The most important trend in the cyber security industry is the protection of a user’s identity verses focusing on asset and accounts. Identities have a one-to-many relationship with assets and accounts and managing at the higher level produces better results for the overall security of an organisation.

What three words define you?

Reliable, accountable and humble

If you didn’t work in security, what would you be doing?

If I didn’t work in security, I sincerely would like to build a workshop to restore classic cars or wood working. I thoroughly enjoy building, fixing and creating things with my hands and a workshop for either of my passions would be ideal.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?

Ignoring the facts in my CV, I think people would find it interesting that I supplemented my college tuition by being a DJ (disc jockey) for parties, weddings, birthdays and other special events. The shear fact of being on stage and learning how to speak in front of a crowd has helped me build my personal brand today.

What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?

I would make half height cubicles and windows compulsory in the office for all employees. I would ban rooms, including conference rooms, that do not have an external view from being constructed in any office space.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see my journey continuing in cyber security and evolving the protection of identities into a decentralised model and the creation of truly portable identity management (especially for privileges).
