Featuring as many as 13 country pavilions, Intersec has drawn the attention of the global security community over the years due to its region-wide reach. These pavilions bring together small and medium sized exhibitors from various countries who display their products and solutions for the Middle East. General D.L. Berlijn, former Chief of Defence and Commander in Chief of the Dutch Armed Forces, who helped organise the Dutch Pavilion, said: “The Middle East is very important because it brings together players from all over the world. The UAE has proven to be a place where people want to meet and Intersec has proven to be a platform for people to network so it is a good place to establish new contacts from all over the world.” ORBIK, manufacturers of emergency lighting systems are showcasing their range of environmentally friendly products are an exhibitor within the UK Pavilion. They have been exhibiting at Intersec since the show first launched 14 years ago. Philip Elwell, Managing Director for ORBIK, said: “Throughout the years Intersec has been a very effective exhibition for us. It brings in a lot of extra companies for us, not just from the UAE, but from the entire region. We have many projects in Dubai such as the Dubai Metro and the Dubai Airport Free Zone and these came through from exhibiting here.” Angus Cameron, Marketing Manager of Fire Protection Specialists NAFFCO who have been participating for four years, said: “We have seen lots of interest and ours is one of the busiest stands. We are having many seminars for new products which is driving interest. We will definitely participate next year. “ NAFFCO is launching its Falcon Monitoring System for the first time. The system is used to avoid fire accidents and maintain buildings at optimum safety levels by constantly monitoring fire fighting system and safety equipment to ensure everything works properly whenever needed. The system is connected through the GSM network to a central remote monitoring station that receives alarm and fault reports. “Intersec continues to be the preferred trade and business event for the region, which is a key market for the security and safety industries,” said Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of organiser Epoc Messe Frankfurt. “The encouraging response and feedback received from our exhibitors indicates that the event is one that is continuing to set the standards around the region.” The comprehensive programme of conferences and seminars alongside the event continued to attract the attention of experts and professionals around the region. The Summit on Commercial Security drew attention to the growing concern from industry and corporates worldwide about the increasingly sophisticated methods of today’s criminals. The summit examined various strategies to anticipate and counter such threats. Outside the exhibition halls the UAE International FireFit Championsips was a hive of frenetic activity with elite fire and rescue personnel from around the region participating in tests of strength and endurance against each other. The second day comprised of individual races where firefighters from the UAE, Kuwait, Canada, UK, France and Germany raced against time to complete exhausting tasks that they usally face during real life missions. Mohammed Hassan Al-Ahmadi, founder and chairman of the UAE International FireFit Championship, said that these tasks are a real test of character of these heroes. Al Ahmadi said: “These competitions simulate the same pressures and urgencies that fire fighters are regularly faced with, racing against time to save precious lives. Delay of a few seconds could be the difference between life and death.” He also noted that these competitions are a way to create awareness in society about the significant role that firemen play on a daily basis, putting their lives in danger, so that the community can go about their lives feeling secure. The Outdoor Demo area is once again proving to be another highly popular attraction at Intersec, drawing flocks of visitors to view a series of tactical rescues and close combat operations by FireKraft, Austria, the demos showcase interactive scenarios across the fields of rescue, counter terror and law enforcement. *Preliminary numbers (2011) Contact www.intersecexpo.com

Navtech Radar showcasing new AdvanceGuard surveillance solution at Intersec 2012

The award-winning company will also present new software features and functionalities in the witness control suite At the forthcoming Intersec exhibition, which will be taking place at the International Convention Centre, Dubai, on 15-17 January, Navtech Radar will be showcasing its sophisticated AdvanceGuard wide-area surveillance solution, as well as enhancements to the witness processing system which drives and controls it. The company’s exhibit can be found in Hall 4 at the UK Pavilion on Stand 427C, and following the show members of the Navtech Radar team will remain in Dubai to host demonstration days for existing and potential customers. “Intersec will be our first opportunity to show the new AGS sensor addition to the AdvanceGuard system to customers in the Middle East region,” says Managing Director Phil Avery. “The AdvanceGuard wide-area detection and tracking solution covers both the perimeter and the area within a secure site using high-frequency scanning radar and advanced tracking algorithms. The system includes a background map display which shows the location of people or vehicles to a control room operator as they move within the site, and map locations are updated once a second. PTZ CCTV cameras can be guided to automatically follow a threat and thermal cameras can be included as part of the system if required. AdvanceGuard operates in all weather and light conditions and can detect a variety of targets including people, vehicles or boats over water.” Navtech Radar offers a range of radar sensors suitable for use within the AdvanceGuard solution. These operate from a minimum detection distance of 2 metres up to a maximum of 1,600 metres. The radar systems can be mounted close to the ground or several metres up and out of reach as required. Detection and non-detection zones can be software configured to suit a particular site. Different interfaces are also available, from simple alarm output devices through to security management system integration. The AdvanceGuard control system – witness – is comprised of six integrated modules and provides a range of crucial system services; from tracking targets and controlling cameras to handling the complex algorithms that analyse a target’s behaviour and assign threat levels. At Intersec, a series of new software features and functionalities will be shown: Situation awareness has been improved with zone-specific parameters which allow tracking in different areas to be tailored. For instance, different areas of the same site can be given very different sensitivity rules depending on the exact nature of the area (road, rough ground, water, car park and so on) to be covered. A new approach rule allows the system operator to be told if an intruder/target is approaching a certain point from any position. If for example an aircraft or vehicle is parked at a given location for a period of time, the operator can position a virtual marker over the area. This will generate an alarm if someone approaches it and gets within a predetermined range. This can be done quickly and easily, and is extremely useful for sites that need a dynamic solution because requirements change quickly. It also does away to some extent with the operator having to draw new zones around areas that are subject to change. Other new features include camera viewers which pop up automatically when a camera is tracking and improved support for IP cameras; Navtech Radar is adding new cameras to its camera compatibility list all the time. For the first time at Intersec, Navtech Radar will be offering two days of live systems demonstrations. The first, Wednesday 18 January, is already fully booked however there are still appointments available on Thursday 19 January. Those interested can obtain details and times from the company’s stand during the show. Finally, visitors to Intersec will be able to see for the first time a short video showing how Navtech Radar’s AdvanceGuard works in conjunction with CCTV in a live scenario. Stand No. S3-120P, 15-17th January 2012, Dubai Avon Barrier Company Ltd., following recent success with major security installations in the Middle East, has chosen Intersec to introduce its newly extended range of crash-tested anti-terrorist vehicle blockers and associated Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) solutions, stand no. S3-120P. New for Intersec is the company’s range of static bollards, all of which have been physically crash-tested to PAS 68 standard.  The Avon Scimitar bollards provide vital protection for perimeter, building, street and access route security, especially where there may be a risk of terrorism, such an extreme Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack. Impact testing has been carried out at different speeds with four bollard models within the range to offer a choice of options from 30-50mph impact protection depending on the application.  The Scimitar range provides an important new product for high level security, but without the need for an outwardly aggressive appearance and is therefore suitable for on-street and shopping mall use, as well as wider applications. NEBOSH launching new fire safety and risk management certificate at Intersec 2012

A new vocational qualification has been developed to help reduce the annual worldwide cost of fire damage of around $630 billion. Safety, health and environmental examination board NEBOSH will officially launch the International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management at the Intersec trade fair in Dubai on 15th January 2012. Thousands of people die and many more are injured throughout the world as a result of fires each year. A large number of these deaths and injuries occur in workplaces and often result from failure to manage the risks of fire. As well as the cost in terms of lives, fires also have a huge economic impact. According to the World Fire Statistics Centre (1) – the annual worldwide cost of fire is around 1% of global GDP (Gross Domestic Product), or around $630 billion (2). A large proportion of businesses never recover following a fire. “This latest qualification will help raise standards of fire risk management in workplaces across the world,” said NEBOSH Chief Executive, Teresa Budworth. “Our qualification will provide safety practitioners, managers and others with the know-how and skills to significantly improve fire safety where they work.” The qualification covers the causes of fire in workplaces, fire prevention and protection techniques. To achieve the qualification students will need to carry out a fire risk assessment in their own workplace. The International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management is based on International standards and good practice from organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Code Council (ICC) and the Confederation of Fire Protection Association Europe (CFPA-Europe).
