Developing enhanced port security strategies in the Middle East to prevent security threats

DSC_4881f (Custom)The security of national ports has historically always been a cause for concern for any great power. Ports remain one of the primary gateways for international trade, so the need for these ports to be secure cannot be understated. With continued piracy, trafficking, smuggling and global threats of terrorism, the security of Middle East’s ports remains of utmost importance. Recent developments in some of Middle East’s ports have stressed the need for increased advances in technologies, strategies and control of port security.

GCC countries are allocating $36 billion to further develop their port infrastructure amid increasing foreign non-oil trade volumes.

With such complex mega-projects underway it is crucial to ensure the security aspects of these ports are implemented within budget and with conflicting deadlines. In light of such mega investment projects it must be noted that Middle East as the hub on all sea trade activities and with each port requiring tailor made security systems to suit specific needs and challenges.

Recent market surveys on seaport security solutions in the Middle East, conducted by IQPC and GEC, have shown that there is a lack of knowledge on the benefits of new technology to secure the Ports. IQPC’s and GEC’s second annual Port Security and Coastal Surveillance Middle East will feature exclusive presentations by high level regional and international speakers. This conference will address threats posed to security within seaports in the Middle East, the best practices, regulations to maintain security at seaports and evolution of port security on a global scale.

A seaport terminal may increase its liability exposure not only for failing to implement sound security measures but for failing to properly train its personnel in effective security measures.

Port Security and Coastal Surveillance Middle East will feature United Engineering Services LLC (UES), an international company headquartered in Oman. The UES marine division specialises in the design & manufacturing of high speed interceptor boats for ‘Coastal Protection’, utilising 3D infusion process which enhances & optimizes the advanced composite manufacturing technology. The unique properties of advanced high strength construction Fibres, Carbon, Kevlar and high strength epoxy resins provide optimum strength to weight ratio. Using 3D infusion and one piece bonded grid structure; UES ensures the boat’s performance will remain consistent, reliable and durable, while saving significant operating costs for the end user.

Being the only company in Oman that utilises 3D infusion process for advanced composites manufacturing for the marine, defence, aerospace and oil and gas industries, United Engineering Services is strategically placed to deliver advanced solutions and provide the right tool to protect ports and coasts in and around the GCC region.

Port Security and Coastal Surveillance Middle East 2014 will take place between 28 – 30 October 2014 in Muscat and will address today’s key port and coastal security challenges and identify best practices to monitor and prevent incidents.
