7 lessons Security Managers can learn from Pro Football Coaches

The world of sport was stunned by Leicester City’s surprising win of the Premier League 2015-16 championship, their first ever. The odds at betting agencies for the likelihood of such a scenario were 5000/1 at the beginning of the season. This win, together with the surprising win of Atletico Madrid against F.C Barcelona, made me think of what security and operations managers can learn from it when they want to select situation management solutions.
Here are a couple of my observations:
- Picking the right players
It is critical for any successful team to have scouters that can detect talented young players that augment your exiting team in synergetic way.
Lessons for security and operations managers:Invest in solutions that leverage legacy systems and create a greater synergy.
- Turning a group of talented individuals into a team
It is always a treat to see players that are selfless and can make the perfect pass to their teammates without even seeing them…
Lessons for real-world managers:Invest in solutions that facilitate collaborative response and allow to seamlessly share and exchange critical information in real time among all relevant stake holders.
- Knowing the strengths and weakness of your adversaries
As talented as your team maybe it is critical to have full appreciation of what you are up against and make the necessary adaptions in your game plan.
Lessons for real-world managers:Conduct risk analysis and prepare mitigation plans that are codified into your situation management solution to guide operators’ and field personnel’s actions.
- Know the current strengths and weakness of your team
Be fully aware of your team’s shortcomings like injuries as they are now and don’t overestimate or underestimate the strengths.
Lessons for real-world managers:You must create a resilient, fault tolerant system architecture in which security and business operation aren’t comprised due to a failure of a point solution. Make sure you have business continuity and contingency plans that can be immediately activated in case of failure.
- Practice makes perfect
Practice tactics to mitigate your opponent’s strengths and to exploit their vulnerabilities.
Lessons for real-world managers:Run drills and simulations to verify the effectiveness of your mitigation plans and the readiness of your team.
- Closely analyse the situation on the pitch and respond quickly
Observe how your game plans unfold and make real time modifications such as substitutions to ratify the situation.
Lessons for real-world managers:Make sure to have KPI (key performance Indicator) dashboards that provide you a full assessment on how well your organisation is doing in one glance, and to have the flexibility to invoke the right procedures to address any event.
- Don’t rest on your laurels
Draw lessons from each game irrespective of the final score and instill a culture of continuous improvement. Let’s not forget that tomorrow there is a new ball game.
Lessons for real-world managers:Invest in debriefing and pattern analysis tools that can help you to gain valuable insights and leverage past experience for improved performance.
I’m not sure if adopting what is listed above will help you win the equivalent of the championship… but I’m certain that your organisation’s odds of triumphing this year’s challenges will be much better than 5000/1.
