City Building Glasgow renews SBD membership

One of Scotland’s largest construction companies, City Building (Glasgow) LLP, have renewed their membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

City Building is one of Scotland’s largest construction companies, who provide a range of repairs and maintenance, manufacturing, construction and refurbishment activities across the public, private and third sectors.

As well as providing the largest construction craft apprenticeship programme in Scotland, City Building also operate Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), one of the largest supported manufacturing businesses in Europe. RSBi employs over 250 people, more than 50% of whom have a disability.

City Building is comprised of two organisations, City Building (Glasgow) LLP which operates within a joint 50/50 ownership arrangement between Glasgow City Council and Wheatley Housing Group and City Building (Contracts) LLP which is a wholly owned Arms Length External Organisation of Glasgow City Council.

City Building, was presented with its third Queen’s Award for Enterprise, as part of a prestigious civic reception in the City Chambers. The Promoting Opportunity award recognises the firm’s excellence in promoting opportunity through social mobility.

City Building is the first ever construction firm, and only the fourth business in Scotland, to achieve the Investor in Young People (IYP) Platinum accreditation, which it was awarded in May 2022. City Building, which has more than 2,000 staff, is Scotland’s largest employer of apprentices with around 200 apprentices on its books. It is also the industry’s largest employer of female craft trade apprentices, and it has one of the highest pass-out rates for apprentices at 94%.

Alan Burns Executive Director of City Building said: “The ongoing partnership between City Building and Secured by Design has played a vital role in the protection and safety of all City Building projects.

“By renewing City Building’s membership with the scheme, we are signalling an ongoing commitment to deterring and preventing crime and antisocial behaviour surrounding City Building sites. We will also create tangible benefits to both City Building as a company and the wider community that we serve.

“We are looking forward to continuing our work with Secured by Design in the coming years.”

SBD National Lead Kenny McHugh said: “I am delighted that City Building have renewed their Secured by Design membership.  They are a highly successful business who deliver a wide range of high quality construction and manufacturing operations, including design and build construction projects, new house building and major refurbishment projects across both the public and private sectors.  I am looking forward to working with them over the coming years”.
