British Safety Council Workshop at Safety & Health Expo

safety-and-health-expo-2014The British Safety Council will be running a free workshop on improving health and safety culture at work and exhibiting our full range of health, safety and environmental training, qualification, auditing, advisory and membership services on stand U2401 at the Safety & Health Expo 2014 at ExCeL London on 17-19 June 2014.

The Safety Culture Change workshop will take place from 10.30 – 13.00 on Thursday 19 June in North Gallery Room 17, and will be hosted by Nick Wharton and Steve Beswick from our safety culture change programme partner JOMC Ltd.

In an interactive session, extreme sports enthusiast Nick will explain how his experience of mountaineers, climbers and skiers narrowly avoiding death due to errors such as taking short-cuts and failing to be given warnings by co-adventurers reflects the symptoms of a poor health and safety culture at work. This includes problems such as workers failing to follow rules because “no one else does” or simply because they haven’t received the necessary information, instruction and training.

Steve will then relate these lessons to the workplace, using interactive exercises to show how approaches such as understanding why people act unsafely, making it easier for workers to make the right decisions and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable in speaking up when something is unsafe are all essential for a positive health and safety culture.

Using real-life examples, Nick and Steve will then show how the British Safety Council’s culture change services can overcome these problems, securing genuine workforce engagement in health and safety and acheiving lower workplace accident rates in the process.

Nick says: “You will learn how the British Safety Council/JOMC’s approach to changing culture can make a real and sustainable difference to the safety performance in your workplace, whatever your challenges.”

british-safety-councilBritish Safety Council staff will also be on present on stand U2401 to explain the benefits of our full range of health, safety and environmental products and services. These include an extensive range of training courses and qualifications delivered face-to-face, via e-learning and distance learning; audit, advisory and safety culture change services; international award schemes; and membership, publications and information services.

The British Safety Council is also supporting Health & Safety Week 2014, which will run from 16-20 June, and will be formally launched by Judith Hackitt CBE, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive, on Tuesday 17 June. The newly launched Week aims to reinstate a positive image for the health and safety sector, reflecting on the success achieved so far in reducing deaths at work and seeking to meet the challenge of reducing the scale of occupational disease. The Week is supported by the UK’s leading health and safety bodies.
