HID M1 Transparent Gateway redefines high-security access control with transparent architecture and scalable deployment compliance
Europe’s high-security facilities no longer have to choose between meeting stringent cryptographic mandates and protecting the access control infrastructure they’ve already built.
Across Europe, the compliance clock is ticking. Regulatory frameworks led by France’s ANSSI CSPN certification — and spreading to the UK, Germany and the Nordics — now require all cryptographic operations to occur in physically secured locations, not at vulnerable perimeter readers. For government agencies, critical infrastructure operators and high-security facilities, these aren’t guidelines. They are mandates with deadlines and real consequences for organisations that fail to meet them.
Until now, meeting them came at a significant cost. Organisations faced a stark choice: replace their entire physical access control infrastructure or remain exposed and out of compliance. For most, neither option was workable. Full infrastructure replacement means months of operational disruption, substantial capital expenditure and the considerable business risk that comes with overhauling security systems that facilities depend on around the clock.
The HID M1 Transparent Gateway was built to change that.
Why Transparent Architecture Is the New Standard
Traditional access control systems perform cryptographic operations at the reader — a device mounted on the perimeter, physically accessible and often outside the most hardened security zone. That creates an inherent vulnerability: the point where authentication happens is also the point most exposed to physical attack and interception.
Transparent architecture addresses this by moving cryptographic operations away from the reader and into a secured, controlled location. The reader becomes a trusted conduit rather than the cryptographic engine. The organisation — not the technology vendor — retains exclusive control over its own encryption keys.
A First-of-Its-Kind Approach: The Gateway Difference
The HID M1 sits between existing OSDP controllers and readers, handling all transparent architecture cryptographic operations independently. From the PACS software’s perspective, nothing changes. Controllers communicate exactly as before. Existing MIFARE DESFire credentials continue functioning. No software changes, no system reconfiguration, no credential reissuance and no downtime.
Each main node supports up to eight transparent HID Signo™ readers, with encryption keys stored in a dedicated module under full organisational control and administered centrally through HID Linq Key Manager. The M1 is controller-agnostic, working with any OSDP-compatible controller — making it deployable across the widest possible range of existing infrastructure.
Selective Compliance, Scalable Deployment
Not every door carries the same risk profile. The HID M1 reflects this. Organisations can deploy transparent architecture door-by-door, hardening only the high-risk entry points that require it while preserving existing infrastructure everywhere else. Security teams satisfy regulatory requirements where they matter most, then scale incrementally as priorities and budgets allow.
For integrators, this opens a clear path to compliance-driven projects without custom engineering overhead — and phased revenue opportunities tied directly to customer compliance roadmaps.
Built for Today’s Compliance. Ready for Tomorrow’s Threats.
At its core is an AI-capable system-on-module processor — a deliberate architectural decision that makes the M1 an evolutive platform rather than a point-in-time compliance fix. As regulatory requirements deepen and the threat landscape shifts, the gateway adapts through software updates rather than hardware replacement. Future capabilities, from edge analytics to deeper integration with enterprise security operations, can be layered onto infrastructure already in place.
Built on open European and international standards including EN IEC 60839, the HID M1 Transparent Gateway is available now through selected partners across Europe.
