Dionisios Lakasas & Dimitrios Mitsitsikas, Chief Technology Officer and R&D Manager, Olympia Electronics S.A. discusses operational challenges of emergency lighting
Please introduce yourself and give us an insight into Olympia Electronics.
We are Dionisios Lakasas and Dimitrios Mitsitsikas, serving as Chief Technology Officer and R&D Manager at Olympia Electronics S.A. Together, we guide the company’s technology strategy, product development and research activity across one of Europe’s most comprehensive portfolios of emergency lighting and fire detection systems.
Olympia Electronics was founded in 1979 and has evolved from a specialised Greek manufacturer into a global leader in safety technology, with installed products in major buildings and infrastructures in more than 72 countries. For more than four decades, our reputation has been built on engineering reliability, innovation, and absolutely fail-safe systems, with a clear mission: to protect human life.
Today, we operate modern production facilities, an accredited testing laboratory, and a strong R&D ecosystem focused on next-generation emergency lighting, smart evacuation technologies, IoT monitoring, sustainable product design, and full compliance with international standards.
Our dedication to quality and technical integrity, combined with a forward-looking approach to safety engineering, makes Olympia Electronics a trusted partner for airports, hospitals, hotels, universities, industrial facilities, commercial buildings and complex infrastructures worldwide.
What specific operational challenges in modern, high-traffic buildings led Olympia Electronics to develop the Dynamic LED emergency lighting series?
Modern buildings, airports, shopping centres, hospitals, stadiums, universities, large transport hubs, operate in environments where occupancy is constantly changing, movement patterns are unpredictable and emergency scenarios evolve rapidly. In our field research together with safety engineers, recurring challenges appeared that static signage cannot address:
When a corridor fills with smoke or becomes blocked, a static sign continues to direct people toward a now unsafe exit, causing confusion and delaying evacuation. Complex building geometries, multiple levels, atria, intersecting escape paths, different risk zones, require dynamic, context-aware guidance, not a fixed symbol installed once.
In peak-hour conditions, crowd density can overload a single exit, making real-time redistribution of occupants essential to avoid bottlenecks and panic. Evacuation plans frequently change (new layouts, new regulations), but traditional hardware remains rigid and inflexible, locked into an earlier design stage.
All of these revealed the need for an adaptive, intelligent, and programmable evacuation signaling system. The Dynamic LED Emergency Lighting Series was developed to offer real-time directional intelligence, enhancing clarity and decision-making during evacuations….
