The University of Surrey’s MSc in Information Security has been recognised with a GCHQ certification. The new course, offered by the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security through the Department of Computing, was chosen for delivering high-standard and industry-relevant cyber security research and education, from internationally recognised cyber security academics.
Following a competitive process, the new course was selected as one of six GCHQ-certified degrees in the UK. The programme is designed to ensure highly-skilled information and cyber security professionals for industry, government and academic sectors, in order to meet the security challenges of the future.
“The need for highly-skilled cyber security experts in the UK cannot be underestimated. There is a major skills gap that needs addressing,” said Dr Mark Manulis, Associate Professor at the Department of Computing of the University of Surrey. “Our future economic growth, national security and day-to-day lives depend upon a secure and reliable digital world. Opportunities for graduates in this field are not only growing year on year, but offer careers that are exciting, meaningful and challenging.”

The certification lasts for 5 years and is the first step towards recognition as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education.
Surrey’s MSc Information Security degree can be studied in full-time mode from 2014 and will be available in part-time mode from 2015.
The programme covers main fields of cyber and information security such as network security, cryptography, information security assurance and risk management, system security, digital forensics, multimedia protection, and privacy enhancing technologies.
