Ransomware is the name given to a type of malware that covertly installs itself on a computer, releasing a virus that demands a ransom payment in order for the user to be able to remove it from their system. A simple virus may be designed to lock a system, but a more advanced type of ransomware will be able to target specific elements of the system, such as encrypting the user’s files, making them inaccessible. The virus will then demand the payment in order to decrypt them – hence the ‘ransom’ prefix.

Downloading ransomware can be done unwittingly and completely by accident. A user could be tricked into clicking on an infected pop-up advert or by visiting an infected website – even opening what seems like a harmless attachment on an e-mail. Once malware has been installed on a computer it will then undertake the attack, which could take the form of locking certain aspects of the system, display warning messages that their files will be deleted – even restricting internet use.

Other more, advanced types of ransomware are able to determine the geographical location, which will give it an opportunity to display their warnings in the user’s language, usually demanding a monetary payment (or in some cases, a password) for them to regain the full capabilities of the system. Even if the ‘ransom demand’ is paid, many attackers simply won’t release the system from the effects of their attack – which is why it’s vitally important that users need to be fully aware of how to take measures to prevent ransomware attacks from happening in the first place.
