SPIE Scotshield installs fire prevention and security services at Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

SPIE Scotshield has completed the installation of a new fire and security system at the Cramlington Hospital; a new specialist emergency care centre in Northumbria. As part of the contract, worth in excess of £1m, the team was tasked with delivering a reliable and effective solution that improved the facility’s security as well as site operations.

The first of its kind in the country, Cramlington Hospital is dedicated to treating seriously ill or injured people and has emergency care consultants working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The project marks the first large venture for SPIE with Northumbria healthcare.

Having worked closely over the years, and as a direct result of its excellent track-record in this field, SPIE was subcontracted by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services to work on the project . Most recently, SPIE delivered cutting edge fire alarm technology at the New South Glasgow Community Hospital and Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Scotland.

Within the wider M&E development, SPIE Scotshield has been responsible for the installation of an L1 category (a fire category that defines what coverage a building needs as guided by the British Standard and end user’s insurance) fire alarm solution. The technology includes a full graphics system and front-end capability to allow staff to use a PC-based alarm system.

Additionally, SPIE installed 10 networked fire alarm panels and an access control system with over 400 doors linked to the fire alarm, as well as automatic doors and intercoms.

In order to strengthen security 14 video intercom systems have been installed at ward entrances and intruder alarms placed strategically in seven areas of the site. CCTV 193 Ip cameras have been fitted along with 3 servers and a video wall, based in security, for enhanced control.

Colin Armstrong, Maintenance Manager for Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management, commented:

“SPIE have installed high-tech intelligent fire detection, door access and intruder alarm systems to the new emergency care hospital, and secured the maintenance to this equipment for future years. This has been a successful project for the NHS and is serving the people of Northumberland and the North East in general.”

Rory Walker, Operations Director for SPIE Scotshield comments:

“We have been delighted to work on such an innovative project and to continue our expansion in the healthcare sector. Throughout these works, SPIE Scotshield has performed as a tight-knit team, designing and installing the fire and security systems to extremely tight timescales. We are confident the work has been completed to the very highest standard, ensuring the protection and safety of the patients, employees and visitors.”
