Ava Group Unveils Latest Enhancements to its Powerful Market-Leading Aura Ai-2 Advanced Fibre Optic Intrusion Detection and Location Solution

Ava Group, a provider of risk management services and technologies, announced new enhancements to its market-leading FFT Aura Ai-2 advanced fibre optic detection controller, which offers superior intrusion detection location accuracy together with extended range performance. The system is perfect for monitoring pipelines, perimeters and communications networks. Mark Horton, Global Sales and Marketing Director at Ava Group commented, “The Aura Ai-2 is our next generation controller and was released to industry acclaim last year, being recognised for its ground-breaking performance. However, the system has had further performance upgrades and now offers monitoring of optical distances of 80km for perimeter fence detection or 110km for pipeline or covert buried detection. Accuracy has also been enhanced, the system can now pinpoint an intrusion location down to within +/- 2m metres on a fence mounted application. The controller is also able to cover different applications simultaneously, for example fence mounted and covert buried detection. This essentially offers two units in one, saving on both procurement and operational costs.”  The Aura Ai-2 controller works by pulsing laser light along optical fibre cables connected to each of its two detection channels. Dependent on the application these cables are either laid adjacent to a pipeline, attached to a perimeter fence or buried along a perimeter boundary. Minute disturbances cause changes in the scattered light and the Aura Ai-2 controller automatically analyses this reflected light to detect, locate and report disturbances. Advanced optical signal processing algorithms, combined with artificial intelligence, accurately and reliably analyse the reflected light to discriminate between intrusions and other causes of disturbance. This significantly reduces nuisance alarms whilst maintaining full awareness of any situation. When wired in a redundant loop configuration the two-channel controller provides cut resilience and continues to provide detection in the event of deliberate or accidental cable cut. Dr Jim Katsifolis, CTO at Ava Group Technology Division commented, “As is the case with any fibre optic system, the key to increasing performance over distance is to maximise its optical power budget. The maximum allowable optical signal loss the system can tolerate while still maintaining proper operation. We have enhanced our Aura Ai-2 platform by designing new ultra low-noise detection electronics that significantly increase its dynamic range and consequently, its optical power budget. When combined with other design improvements that minimise noise while increasing detected signal strength, the Aura Ai-2 now has an industry leading power budget of 13.5 dB. We’ve achieved higher signal-to-noise ratios across the whole sensor, maximising the signals detected from both the near and far ends of the sensing fibre.” As it utilises the sensitivity of fibre optic technology, Aura Ai-2 is also perfect for monitoring fibre optic communications networks. The system can monitor for tapping and tampering by connecting spare fibres inside each network cable to Aura Ai-2. Network cable disturbances, including removal of protective layers, attempted tapping or cable movement, will be instantly detected and generate an alarm indicating the location. Aura Ai-2 is the ideal protection solution for critical infrastructure such as high-risk oil & gas pipelines, chemical or water pipelines as they traverse often remote and inhospitable locations. It is also perfect for protecting long boundary perimeters alongside railway lines, airports and ports.  Mark Horton added, “In the key terms of distance and accuracy, Aura Ai-2 easily outperforms its competitors and has already proven to be highly popular in the market. The system has already been chosen for a large Middle East pipeline and perimeter fence project, with protection of both assets conveniently controlled from just one controller. In another project the system has also been employed to monitor and alert of any rockfalls or landslides near a rail line that could endanger people or rolling stock.” Since its launch, Aura Ai-2 has already won awards including at the Securex Poland International Security Fair Awards in relation to its perimeter protection capabilities.    With a combination of performance, reliability and flexibility, Aura Ai-2 is finding new and innovative uses. As Mark Horton concluded, “This powerful solution has many potential uses and is already being utilised to protect the security of vital government facilities, military installations, critical infrastructure and custodial facilities.” www.theavagroup.com www.avaglobal.com www.fftsecurity.com

Paxton unveils new site management app

UK-based electronic IP access control and video door entry solutions manufacturer, Paxton, has announced the launch of its new app for managing Net2, Paxton Connect Admin. Available on iOS and Android, the app has already been previewed at a variety of shows across the globe, including IFSEC International, Securex South Africa and ISC West where it reportedly received fantastic feedback from installers. In terms of the technology itself, the manufacturer describes its app as providing easy and flexible site management for Net2 System Engineers and Operators. Paxton Connect Admin has also received positive feedback from the manufacturer’s user community, being described as highly recommended from the Paxton installers which have been trialling the app for the past month. The app contains several important features in one smart user interface and enables users to manage multiple sites remotely from a smartphone. Its key features include Open Door – the ability to open a door directly from a phone, wherever the user is; User Administration – the ability to add, delete and edit users for easy management; Roll Call – which allows people to quickly establish whether users are marked as safe in an emergency; Events and Reports – which is a tool that delivers real-time updates for live information on users’ locations. Going into more detail, Open Door shows users which doors then have access to and gives visual feedback with a green flash for opened doors and red for denied. User Administration allows users to manage anti-passback, intruder alarm and lockdown user rights as well as add and edit images of users and add tokens to users via access denied events. With Roll Call, it is possible to see users’ last known positions, call users via the app and view a users’ image as stored within Net2. Finally, the reporting included within Events and Reports sees default Net2 reports appear within the app, while users can also view live Net2 events and dynamically search events and reports. The reports default to the last 365 days. “The way our customers manage their site security is evolving; the ability to manage Net2 on the go is key to flexible site management,’ said Gareth O’Hara, Paxton’s Chief Sales Officer. “We have responded to customer feedback and designed Paxton Connect Admin to provide the features needed for simple site management available to use wherever our customers are.” The app is available to download now from both the App Store and Google Play. When signing into the app there is an additional level of security provided by smartphone biometric authentication. www.paxton.co.uk

West African Cyber Security Summit confirmed

The West African Cyber Security Summit (WACSS) has been confirmed to take place on the 21 March 2018 alongside Securex West Africa at the Landmark Centre in Lagos, Nigeria. Six of the world’s fastest growing cyber security economies can be found in Africa, including Nigeria. Cybercrime is a rapidly growing problem affecting Africa, fuelled by the high levels of poverty as it’s relatively easy to carry out and the lack of legal policies to prevent and prosecute perpetrators if, and when, they are caught makes it all the more attractive to criminals. This increase has driven the market demand for cyber security solutions in recent years, with Nigeria at the epicentre of it all. According to recent reports, the federal government predicted the annual cost of cyber crime in Nigeria to be around 0.08% of the country’s overall GDP, which is an estimated N127 billion. To best tackle this wave of criminality, government officials and businesses alike need to be educated as to sophisticated solutions and how to implement them. The West African Cyber Security Summit (WACSS) is the ultimate platform to learn about essential market developments, key trends, cutting-edge technology and to discuss strategies to address the latest risks and threats facing the industry. 2017’s inaugural edition of WACSS brought together key individuals from leading organisations and government agencies. Among those in attendance were KPMG, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ernst & Young, G3, CSEAN, Interpol and many more. This invitation-only summit will welcome 150 senior cyber security representatives from both the private and public sector, all eager to be at the forefront of innovation in the industry. With the full interactive programme yet to be announced, organisers have divulged several key themes that this year’s Summit will follow.
