Toshiba’s S300 AI series is a surveillance hard drive range developed specifically for the mixed recording and analytics workloads created by modern AI-enabled video systems. Available from 8TB to 24TB, the 3.5-inch SATA drives combine continuous video recording with the additional random-access demands generated when AI software analyses stored footage, metadata and events in real time.
Unlike a conventional surveillance HDD designed primarily for sequential recording, S300 AI uses Toshiba’s OptiFrame AI Technology to manage simultaneous recording, analytics and metadata workloads. The drive can support up to 64 high-resolution camera streams alongside as many as 32 AI streams, giving integrators a storage platform suited to larger NVRs, video analytics servers and centralised surveillance environments. This makes the range relevant to transport, manufacturing, healthcare, finance, logistics and smart-city applications where recording and analytics increasingly operate as parallel workloads.
Storage tuned for AI surveillance
AI changes the way surveillance storage is used. Continuous camera feeds still need to be written reliably, but analytics platforms are simultaneously retrieving footage for object detection, facial recognition, behavioural analysis and other automated processes. These competing read and write demands can place additional pressure on storage and increase the risk of dropped frames.
OptiFrame is designed to prioritise recording continuity while managing AI-related workloads in the background. Toshiba uses protected recording buffers and adaptive scheduling to balance sequential video writes with AI reads, helping the system retain complete video while remaining responsive to analytics requests.
The series uses conventional magnetic recording across all capacities and operates at 7,200rpm. Depending on capacity, buffer size reaches up to 1GB, while sustained transfer speeds reach up to 309MB/s. Support for multi-bay RAID installations also allows capacity to scale across larger security infrastructures.
Enterprise endurance for always-on systems
S300 AI is rated for continuous 24/7 operation and carries an enterprise-level workload rating of up to 550TB per year. Higher-capacity models provide a mean time to failure of up to 2.5 million hours, while the range is backed by a five-year limited warranty.
The drives support up to 24 drive bays, making them suitable for AI video analytics servers, centralised surveillance storage, archive and recovery platforms, and high-capacity NVR environments. Capacities of 14TB and above use a helium-sealed design to support higher storage density and lower power requirements.
By combining surveillance-specific firmware, high capacity and workload endurance with support for simultaneous camera and AI streams, Toshiba S300 AI provides storage designed around how intelligent surveillance systems now operate: continuously recording, analysing and retrieving data at the same time.
