Seagate SkyHawk AI is a purpose-built surveillance hard drive designed for the increasing storage demands created by continuous video recording and AI-enabled analytics. Rather than adapting a conventional desktop drive for security applications, SkyHawk AI is engineered for 24/7 NVR and edge-security workloads where large volumes of footage must be captured, retained and analysed continuously.
The current SkyHawk AI range reaches capacities of up to 32TB, supporting systems that require extensive local retention without continually increasing drive count. Each drive can support up to 64 HD camera streams alongside 32 AI streams, providing storage for environments where conventional surveillance recording increasingly operates alongside object detection, analytics and deep-learning workloads.
This directly addresses the growth in security data identified in Seagate’s supplied Security Buyer material, where higher-resolution cameras, longer retention requirements and AI-generated metadata are placing additional pressure on surveillance storage infrastructure.
Designed specifically for surveillance workloads
SkyHawk AI uses Seagate’s Image Perfect AI firmware to maintain video recording performance while simultaneously handling analytics workloads. The platform carries a workload rating of 550TB per year, significantly higher than the 180TB-per-year rating of the standard SkyHawk range, making it suitable for larger and more demanding video installations.
Built-in rotational vibration sensors support stability within multi-drive NVR environments, while SkyHawk Health Management provides monitoring intended to identify potential drive problems and support preventative action. The range also uses conventional magnetic recording technology and a 3.5-inch form factor, allowing it to fit established surveillance storage architectures.
A five-year limited warranty applies to current SkyHawk AI models, alongside three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services where available.
Supporting AI at the security edge
The significance of SkyHawk AI increasingly extends beyond simply recording camera footage. Modern security systems generate metadata alongside video, with analytics examining people, vehicles, behaviours and other events in real time. This creates simultaneous write, read and analytical workloads that conventional surveillance storage was not originally designed to manage.
For applications including airports, utilities, retail estates and smart-city infrastructure, storage reliability can directly affect both live operations and later investigations. Seagate’s supplied material highlights environments operating thousands of cameras and generating petabytes of footage, where continuous recording and rapid access to retained data are critical.
By combining surveillance-specific firmware, high capacities and support for simultaneous video and AI streams, SkyHawk AI provides a storage platform designed around the way modern video security systems now operate.
