Supplying on board CCTV, passenger counting and maintenance within a multi-modal transport system.
21st Century, the supplier and installation service provider of public transport CCTV and vehicle monitoring systems, today announces that it has been awarded a contract, totalling £3.3m, by Arriva in Sweden to supply on board CCTV, passenger counting systems, depot infrastructure, related maintenance and software hosting for a substantial part of a fleet of public transport vehicles operated by Arriva in Stockholm.
£2.7m of the contract value will be delivered in the current year and thereafter Arriva have contracted for one year’s maintenance and five years’ software hosting. The Company is optimistic that there is further scope for collaboration within this multi-modal (bus, tram and train) transport system.
21st Century have a well established relationship with Arriva which continues to offer new opportunities as it develops. It will involve Arriva operating 550 buses, 45 trains and 37 trams/light trains. 21st Century is Arriva’s preferred supplier for all their on board CCTV and passenger counting system requirements in this fleet.
This further cements 21st Century’s strategy of product and market expansion in the region. Scandinavia is 21st Century’s second largest market after the UK and the Company continues to look for opportunities to roll out its proprietary technology into other countries in mainland Europe.

Our passenger counting solution is integrated within the bus and uses sensors above each door to accurately count passengers boarding and alighting and then transmit the passenger volume data by route and time to a back-office internet application. In addition, our solution can be used to monitor real time vehicle loads. This information is invaluable if operators wish to vary services quickly and efficiently in response to actual passenger volumes.”
