M1 Transparent Gateway

M1 Transparent Gateway - securitybuyer.com

The HID M1 Transparent Gateway is designed for high-security organisations that need to strengthen physical access control without replacing an established access control estate. Introduced in 2026, the solution sits between existing OSDP-compatible controllers and readers, moving cryptographic processing away from exposed perimeter readers and into a physically secured location.

For security teams facing tighter regulatory and cyber-security requirements, that architecture addresses a practical challenge: how to modernise credential security while preserving existing controllers, PACS software, cards and operational workflows. HID states that M1 meets France’s ANSSI CSPN transparent architecture requirements and has been developed for comparable high-security frameworks emerging elsewhere in Europe.

Securing the cryptographic layer

At the centre of the system is the Main Node, which houses the Key Module responsible for cryptographic operations and encryption-key management. Transparent HID Signo readers act only as passthrough devices, meaning sensitive keys and cryptographic processing are not stored at the door. The customer retains control of encryption keys through HID Linq Key Manager.

M1 supports MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3 credentials using custom AES-128 encryption. Communications between system components are protected across multiple layers, including TLS 1.3 between the Main Node and I/O Modules and secure OSDP v2 communication between I/O Modules and existing access control controllers. HID also incorporates secure boot, firmware integrity checks, signed software updates and cryptographic device pairing intended to reduce the risk of unauthorised hardware substitution or man-in-the-middle attacks.

The architecture can support up to eight Transparent HID Signo readers from a single Main Node through four I/O Modules, providing a scalable route for high-security deployments.

Modernisation without a system-wide replacement

A key element of HID M1 is its ability to work alongside existing access control infrastructure. No PACS head-end software integration is required: existing controllers continue to communicate with the PACS as before while M1 independently handles transparent-architecture cryptographic operations.

This allows organisations to upgrade access points door by door rather than undertaking a full system replacement. Existing DESFire credentials and compatible Signo readers can continue to operate, reducing disruption and enabling security upgrades to be prioritised according to risk, budget or regulatory requirements.

The system is also designed with future development in mind. Its System-on-Module processor is AI-capable, while software-based capability expansion allows the platform to evolve as security requirements change. Combined with support for existing OSDP environments and centralised sovereign key management, HID M1 provides a route for organisations to increase access-control resilience while retaining much of their existing infrastructure.
