HID Facepod is an all-in-one facial recognition platform designed for high-throughput identity verification in environments where speed, accuracy and user experience have to operate together. Combining intelligent image capture, edge AI processing and guided user interaction, the system is intended for applications including airports, border control, government facilities and other high-assurance identity environments.
Rather than requiring users to position themselves precisely in front of a camera, Facepod uses a wide field of view designed to accommodate people from seated positions to almost seven feet tall. Its combination of RGB and near-infrared imaging enables facial capture across varying lighting conditions, including darkness, reducing the need for operators to manually adjust the device between users.
Facial recognition designed for real-world conditions
Facepod uses facial recognition algorithms ranked among the higher-performing solutions in NIST Face Recognition Technology Evaluation benchmarks. Edge AI processing enables biometric operations to be performed locally, helping reduce latency while limiting unnecessary movement of biometric data between systems.
Presentation Attack Detection adds protection against attempts to deceive the system using false biometric representations. This is combined with real-time presence detection, allowing Facepod to recognise when somebody approaches and automatically begin the authentication process.
HID has also focused on demographic performance, using AI trained on diverse datasets to support more consistent recognition across different user populations. This combination of adaptable capture and biometric processing is particularly relevant for environments handling large and varied groups of people.
The device uses configurable dual touchscreens, LED light strips and audio and visual guidance to provide feedback throughout the authentication process. This enables one display to guide the individual being verified while another can provide relevant information to an operator.
Built for integrated identity journeys
An embedded PC allows local applications to operate directly on Facepod while supporting integrations with external technologies including document readers, automated eGates and payment terminals. Deployment options include desktop, wall, pedestal and eGate installations, with VESA-compatible mounting providing further flexibility.
One practical implementation combines Facepod with an ASSA ABLOY Speedgate to create the BG100 biometric eGate. The integrated system uses facial recognition, document verification and automated physical access to support applications including pre-security checks, lounge access, boarding and immigration.
Facepod was recognised with the 2026 GOVIES Award for Biometric Authentication/Identification, reflecting its application within demanding government and identity environments.
By combining edge AI, inclusive facial capture, presentation attack detection and an adaptable hardware platform, HID Facepod provides biometric authentication designed around both identity assurance and the practical requirements of moving people efficiently through secured environments.
